WILPF French Polynesia

Every first Saturday of the month - Velowave - Move for the planet

The WILPF Section in French Polynesia is organizing a bicycle manifestation called VELO WAVE – MOVE FOR THE PLANET. Every first Saturday of the month, starting as of the 5th of September, the manifestation takes place in order to bring attention to the negative environmental impacts of the use of fossil fuels, and to call on the population to show greater respect for the environment.

The event is also intended to call on the government of French Polynesia and Members of its Parliament to work towards the assurance of a safe future for all citizens in Polynesia and in the world. A struggle that needs to begin with the reduction of greens house gas emissions. The organisers push for the creation of bike lanes on all roads and the introduction of taxation for pollution by cars.

The expensive and unstable economy surrounding fossil energy threatens our economical system. For this reason it is imperative to put in place taxation systems for the use of fossil energy. Furthermore, the global climate change increases the risks of natural disasters such as cyclones, flooding, forest fires and desertification. In the longer term, the melting of the polar ices, caused by the global warming, is threatening the existence of countries near sea level.
