WILPF and the BDS movement

Launched in 1959 by a handful of South African students, the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement played a major role in sending official apartheid in South Africa in 1994. In 2004, inspired by this historic success, Palestinian civilian society issued a call for a
similar international concerted action to end apartheid in Palestine-Israel today.
The movement within its Palestinian contexts includes a consumer boycott of Israeli
goods, a proposed academic and cultural boycott of Israeli institutions and universities, and an economic withdrawal from Israel.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom has long struggled with the idea of Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions. However, today even the Israeli section believes that it is necessary to boycott those aspects of the Israeli society that are discouraging efforts to achieve a complete and lasting peace.  It is a position and a campaign which encourages Israel to become a country, that is committed to living in peace within its region and with its neighbours.
