The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a human rights monitoring mechanism of the Human Rights Council (HRC). All States are reviewed every four years in order to examine their human rights achievements and shortfalls. The focus is put on self examination, dialogue, and the sharing of best practices amongst States.
Reports from the State under Review (SuR), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and civil society (including NGOs) are circulated as the basis for a three hour, country specific, interactive dialogue.
At the end of the session a report is issued on each of the countries reviewed. It includes recommendations raised and voluntary commitments and pledges made by the SuR.
The UPR is a perfect mechanism for WILPFs sections to impact on the human rights developments of their countries. Sections can get directly involved with the following 8 Section Action Steps.
