The Provisions of GA resolution 60/251 allow the Council to "address situations of violations of human rights, including gross and systematic violations [...] and contribute, through dialogue and cooperation, towards the prevention of human rights violations and respond promptly to human rights emergencies" as stated in operative paragraph 5(f). In order for such a special session to be held, operative paragraph 10 of the resolution requires the support of one-third of the membership of the Council (16 members). The following provides a list of Special Sessions held by the Human Rights Council, their topics of discussion, helpful documents, and WILPF coverage of these sessions.
