Introduction
WILPF, through our sections and the PeaceWomen Project, is a critical and significant voice in the women, peace and security community at local and global levels. WILPF's strong leadership played a central role in the adoption of resolution 1325 in 2000 and since then WILPF's advocacy has continued to emphasize the diverse roles of women in both preventing conflict and building peace.

The 10th anniversary of SCR 1325 provides a unique opportunity to improve the implementation of the women, peace and security frameworks and reclaim the agenda to refocus on improving the real security and lives of women around the world.

To find more about real security please take two minutes to check out WILPF’s new film clip:
Security: What is it?

In our international offices, New York and Geneva, WILPF is centering our efforts in the coming months and years on developing practical implementation strategies by linking local and global efforts to protect women together. In other words, we are going to develop a guide for women on the ground to protect themselves and their communities and bring about positive change through SCR 1325. With our national sections around the globe and the PeaceWomen Project, WILPF will aim to move the agenda beyond rhetoric towards accountability and action.

What is happening?

Here is an overview of the WILPF associated events to date.

  • Call for Papers - 1325 literature repository to be hosted on PeaceWomen

Ongoing activities
PeaceWomen will be working on advocacy in the build up to the Security Council October Debate.  PeaceWomen will also continue to play an important role in monitoring and updating  peacewomen.org for all users. In addition:
  • PeaceWomen will be writing, editing and launching a SCR 1325 Handbook on Women, Peace and Security language as aide memoire of the agreed language of SC to promote best practice (built on the PeaceWomen Security Council Monitor Project).
  • PeaceWomen will co-publish, edit and produce the ‘Participation Book’ for the 10th anniversary (with GAPW and NGOWG) which is a publication that will assess women's participation in peacemaking, peacekeeping and early post conflict peacebuilding through the eyes of women participants themselves.
  • PeaceWomen will be re-focusing on the translation campaign of both SCR 1325 and SCR 1820.
  • PeaceWomen will also work on a PeaceWomen Voices Initiative for the 10th Anniversary.

The WILPF International Secretariat is currently focusing on their campaign to hold the international community responsible to protect human rights in situations such as Palestine, focusing heavily on engaging women through SCR1325. This has been launched with the release of their paper Statement by WILPF on human rights responsibilities in Gaza. We will keep you updated on developments on this campaign.

Other Global Events

Several events, campaigns and initiatives are being planned by other actors in the lead up to the 10th Anniversary. Some events/initiatives have already been launched and others are still being finalized. For example, throughout June there were Global Open Days in more than 20 post-conflict countries where senior UN officials are opening their doors to women peace activists and leaders.
