Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting

27 February to 1 March 2004
in Otautahi/ Christchurch,
Aotearoa / New Zealand.

Asia-Pacific Perspectives

The purpose of the meeting is to share our work, experiences and ideas, to build on these and to achieve a stronger identity for the Asia-Pacific Region, thus strengthening our voice within WILPF International.

The decision to have a Regional Conference was made at the Asia-Pacific meeting held during the 2002 International Executive Committee meeting in Auckland. We circulated a proposal for this meeting to sections within the region in October and the date and place were finalised following feedback received.

The Regional meeting will be facilitated to provide a supportive and sharing structure, environment and processes to work on the themes that are central to WILPF's work - anti-racism and decolonisation; self determination for indigenous women; demilitarisation and disarmament; economic justice; environment and sustainable development; culture of peace and SC 1325 - and issues from our regions to take to the WILPF Congress later in the year.

You can contribute to the success of the meeting by bringing your enthusiasm, and resources to share, on the issues you are concerned about and working on - for example, news of local campaigns, stories and photos,
research reports, examples of your leaflets and other publications, ideas for future work ...

This will be an opportunity to discuss issues, identify challenges and look for solutions. The intention is to increase our working together within the regions, and to discuss ways that the voices of women in our regions can be heard and acted upon within WILPF International.

One of the topics raised at the 2002 IEC meeting in Auckland was the suggestion put by Indigenous Pacific women that they have an independent regional gathering at another date for training and information exchange. Discussing how WILPF can best support this will be one of the matters for discussion at the Asia-Pacific regional meeting.

Experience inspirational sessions, participate in the creation of WILPF's vision in the Asia-Pacific regions, and develop strategies for making this vision real. And there will be time to experienety of music, leisure and relaxation activities in this vibrant city environment.
