WILPF International Board Meeting Seminar:
21 November 2008, Palais des Nations Room XXIII, Geneva
Over 1325 Billion Arguments for Human Security

Map of Palais des Nations | Agenda | Seminar Registration

WILPF’s International Board meetings bring together representatives from all 37 WILPF Sections, with time set aside to hold a seminar to stimulate political discussion that informs our planning and decision-making.

The title of this year’s seminar invokes Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and draws attention to the colossal sum wasted on global military spending annually, revealed in SIPRI's recently launched 2008 Yearbook to indeed be over 1,325 billion, in fact USD 1,337 billion.

Besides examining the utility of the human security paradigm and the opportunities presented by resolution 1325, we will also spend time on the issue of peacekeeping, which is complex for an organisation that supports the UN but opposes militarised responses as any kind of answer. This year we will also consider the reasons why the Responsibility to Protect is a contested concept.
