WILPF at the Commission on the Status of Women
26 February - 9 March, 2007
United Nations, New York

The priority theme of this CSW will be “The elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child”. We will have a small WILPF delegation at this meeting in NY and have already prepared and submitted a written statement. If you are interested in following the proceedings from home, the WILPF PeaceWomen project website will have updated information here: http://www.peacewomen.org/un/ecosoc/CSW51/index.htm. Or you can follow events through the UN Division on the Advancement of Women website here: http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/csw/51sess.htm

Our written statement is available here: http://www.peacewomen.org/un/ecosoc/CSW51/NGOdocs/wilpf.pdf

Dear WILPFers,

Many of you may have been wondering what the WILPF UN office in New York will be doing for the 2007 Commission on the Status of Women.  For the last several years, the PeaceWomen project in the UN office has acted as the general WILPF coordinator for the CSW.

The 2007 CSW priority theme is the girl child.  This is an area that WILPF has not included in our immediate programmatic priorities, and the PeaceWomen project does not have the expertise to contribute to discussions in a meaningful and substantive way.   We will still be drafting a statement to be submitted to the Commission but will not be coordinating a large delegation.

If WILPF members would still like to come to New York and are happy to arrange their own trip and program (either individually or through WILPF branches or sections), we can still register WILPF members as participants. If you would like to be registered please send an e-mail to sam@peacewomen.org by no later than 1 December 2006. No late registrations will be processed.

Limiting our engagement this year will allow us to better focus our energy for the 2008 session in which there will be a review of the implementation of outcomes from previous sessions on the theme "Women and Armed Conflict" - a theme directly relevant to the work of the PeaceWomen Project and WILPF as a whole. During the WILPF Congress in Bolivia in 2007, we hope to coordinate firm plans for the 2008 session.

If, in the interim, sections would like to do preparatory work for the 2008 CSW, we can set up an e-discussion through WILPF's secretariat. We would like to suggest that national sections first co-ordinate their own internal communication on this and that a section representative then communicate with Susi Snyder in Geneva (susi.snyder@wilpf.ch).

All the best,

Sam Cook
