Military Spending in WILPF Section Countries

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) annual yearbook of 2009 listed 2008 world military expenditure at US$ 1226 billion. This figure is the total for 2008 expressed in constant 2005 prices and exchange rates accounting for inflation in each country since 2005 and then converting to US$ at the 2005 exchange rates. The figure for world military expenditure at 2008 prices and exchange rates equals US$ 1 464 billion. The data below will use constant figures in order to remain compatible with the research of SIPRI  and to provide a relevant look at the degree of change over time. The military expenditure of 2008 has increased 45 percent since 1999 and of 4 per cent compared to 2007.

The combined military spending by governments in the 37 countries where WILPF has sections was almost US$ 927 billion. This figure converts into 76 percent of global military spending.

The chart below lists the countries where WILPF has sections and illustrates their percentage of global military spending.  Countries with military expenditures that make up one percent or more of the world’s total military expenditure are marked in the chart. Countries not specified on the chart have a military expenditure of less than one percent of the total expenditure in the world. These c ountries are: Albania, Argentina, Belarus, Burundi, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Finland, Lebanon, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden. Though these countries are not explicitely marked, their -very small- slices of the pie are included in the graph.

Countries not on the chart due to lack of sources are Palestine, French Polynesia and Costa Rica.

The chart below illustrates contributions to the UN regular budget made by countries where WILPF has sections. Countries whose contributions make up one percent or more of the UN regular budget are marked in the chart. Countries not specified on the chart either do not pay their part of the UN regular budget or make a contribution of less than one percent of the budget. These countries are: Albania, Argentina, Belarus, Bolivia, Burundi, Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Lebanon, Israel, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka.

Countries not on the chart due to lack of sources are Palestine and French Polynesia.
