The UN Conference on Trade and Development was established in 1964, to promote a more development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy, addressing sectors such as finance, technology, investment and sustainable development. The organization fullfills its mandate by functioning both as a forum for intergovernmental debattes and dicssussion aiming at shared visions and consensus building and by provide the debates with undertaken research, data collection and policy analysis. UNCTAD also provides technical assistance to developing countries, paying special attention to countries going through economic change and the least developed countries. The work of UNCTAD focuses on increasing the coherens between domestic policies and international action. To carry out its function the organisation interacts with member Governments, other UN agencies, NGOs and the private sector.

The organization's mandate and priorities are set at the UNCTAD Conferences. At the conferences current trade and development issues are discussed and global policy responses formulated.
